As part of the NPDI, ensuring access to appropriate training for health professionals lead to extensive scoping of training needs.
In collaboration with leading experts in maternity, mental health and primary care, we scoped training needs to better understand what skills and knowledge were required for health professionals working in different levels of maternity care.
A ‘Training Matrix’ was developed, that outlines key components of knowledge and skills required to undertake screening and management of perinatal mental health disorders under the NPDI. The matrix reflects expertise required at basic, intermediate and advanced levels, and provides those developing programs with a framework to assist with preparation of courses and curriculum. The Matrix was also used to inform the development of free online training for health professionals, which is fully accredited by the professional bodies providing primary and maternity care.
