Psychosocial support

There is a range of different types of psychosocial support that may be provided in the perinatal period. These may include:

  • lifestyle advice
  • non-directive counselling
  • discussing emotional health and wellbeing
  • facilitating practical support
  • informing the woman of psychosocial support options in her community (e.g. peer support, support groups, playgroups).

The success of these interventions depends on effective woman-centred communication.
